Bitcoin Debit Card Review 2020: Here, you will always find an actual overview of the available Bitcoin (BTC) and Crypto Debit Cards.
If you are looking for a Bitcoin Debit Card, there are generally 2 variants:
(1) The Bitcoin Debit Card, which works like a Bitcoin wallet. You can transfer and hold Bitcoin directly to these Debit Cards. Depending on the provider, the conversion of Bitcoins is handled differently:
(a) Debit Card where Bitcoin is converted into the card currency directly during the payment process (e.g. TenX, Crypto.com). I.e.: When you pay, the corresponding amount is debited to Bitcoin at the current rate. This possibility is convenient, but not pleasant at low rates.
(b) Other providers (e.g. Wirex, XAPO) leave it to you when you exchange the Bitcoins for the card currency. This is done with a mouse click in the app. These cards are ideal if you want to keep your Bitcoins as long as possible to benefit from possible increases in value – you can wait for the best time.
(2) The Bitcoin Debit Card you can top up with Bitcoin. The Bitcoin amount that you load on the card at the time of loading is converted to the current rate and is then available in the Debit Card currency (e.g. Euro). These cards are useful if you want to load the card with a fixed amount every now and then at high rates.

With a Bitcoin Debit Card you can receive and hold Bitcoin, pay and withdraw money anywhere Debit Cards are accepted. The Debit Cards here work with the debit function: you first load them with Bitcoin, and then you can pay with the card, online and offline. You can learn more about Bitcoin here at wikipedia.
Various providers and issuing offices have endeavoured to issue Debit Cards with crypto functions. The payment provider that issued almost all of these cards from the various providers was Wavecrest – a Gibraltar-based provider with both a VISA and Mastercard license. Due to the too “lax” control and issuance of Debit Cards, Wavecrest first lost its Visa license at the beginning of 2018 and shortly afterwards its Mastercard license as well. The result: There were no more usable Bitcoin Debit Cards on the market.
Since the beginning of 2018, the providers affected by Wavecrest have been working on new ways to issue a Bitcoin Debit Card. While some providers want to work with new cooperation partners, others are applying for a completely new banking license.
The ICO market will be further regulated in mid-2018. There is already a clear difference between crypto-friendly countries such as Malta, Georgia, Estonia, Russia, Singapore and the like. As well as crypto-critical regimes. Legal advice on blockchain, ICOs and crypto licenses in Malta can be found here.
Wirex is the only provider that manages to launch a working Crypto Debit Card for the German market in 2018. The cards are available and working.
At the beginning of 2019, 3 providers will start onboarding new customers. This KYC process (Know your Customer) is a legal requirement for being able to issue customers with a “Bitcoin Debit Card” at a later date. In short, it is a verification, as with all bank accounts, which includes both the identity (passport or similar) and the residential address/residence.
Bitwala, a German cryptobank, in cooperation with Solarisbank, offers an online account including German IBAN, which can be used to process FIAT and Crypto Currencies. At the beginning of 2019 Bitwala started to process the account applications on the basis of a waiting list. In the meantime, the onboarding process has been automated and a Bitwala online account can be opened here within 15 minutes.
Crypto.com and TenX are also starting the KYC process, both companies are currently starting the rollout in Asia. In the second quarter, 2 further providers will also draw attention to themselves. Crypterium states to implement a worldwide card solution. It remains to be seen how a Union-Pay Debit card will be accepted outside Asia. A pre-order is already possible in any case. In addition, Spend.com has started card delivery in the USA. So far we are not very enthusiastic about Spend: We completed our test verification on 07.04.2019, and it is still “processing” today (3 business days are given).
